Hitting that business goal, try another approach

Putting away Christmas

Each year on January 1st I undecorate from the holiday season.  I did not always do this however several years ago I actually went out on New Years Eve and shall we say had one too many cocktails.  Hungover and unable to sleep I decided to “work” the yuk out of me and took down the tree, the decorations and everything else.  Then I went back to bed and woke up refreshed and to a clean house.  It was then that I had that aha moment of how to start the new year.  Fresh and ready to go.

I, like many of you, work from my home so when that is not in order it throws a wrench in everything else.  I have found that no matter how many business goals I have, if the life or personal goals are not being met then I feel like a mouse on a wheel.    Being a mom, wife and business owner the three need to be on an even keel so that one area is not overpowering the next.  By putting everything back to where it needs to be on January 1 I can now move on and not have to figure out when am I going to get my house back in order.  I now can concentrate on what I need to do to make 2012 (or any year) fantastic.

So if you find yourself struggling already, either with your goals or resolutions, try to take a step back and take another approach.  Figure out what is going to get you fresh and ready to roll.

Signing off short and sweet,

Lee

Looking Ahead to the New Year – Office Reorganization

The end of the year is quickly moving upon us.  While may are thinking of the impending holidays and how to survive them, we also need to be strategizing our 2011 business goals.

I began my end of the year journey with a intense de-clutter and organization of my home office.  Well actually, I am tackling my whole house but I began with my home office.  Since I am essentially paperless I began with scanning all my 2010 receipts and important documents.  This simple task allowed me to be ready for the tax man as he rears his ugly head sooner than I care to think about.

I finally decided to recycle all those product manuals that I obsessively hoard.  Knowing the information can be found on-line it was time to let those go and open up that storage space.  This task also allowed me to reevaluate equipment and software that will need replaced or upgraded.

And finally, a good cleaning was in order.  This simple task helped me to get things where they needed to be to make me more productive.  I installed some simple hooks to hang my headsets right above my computing area so that I could easily grab them when doing a recording or needed that extra bit of privacy.  I was also able to see which supplies I was getting low on and have them ordered before the end of the year.  Think tax credits and write off here.  It also allowed to me reorganize my library of reading resources to see which books I needed to revisit and what would go on my preferred reading list.  Before you get on ma about paper books, this is where the esentially paperless part comes into play.  I like to turn pages so no Kindle for me but that does not mean you should not consider one to keep your reading condensed and readily available.

Would reorganizing your office help you set the tone for a productive and goal oriented 2011?

All the best,

Lee

Setting Business Goals

I was asked recently what plan I had to keep my business moving forward. I explained to the inquirer that I take a section of my plan each quarter and review it. My schedule is:

first – services offered,
second – financial planning,
third – marketing and promotion and
fourth – education plan.

However, it is not that I revise my plan; it is that I have a game plan to do so. These are the five tasks I include when updating and revising my business plan.

  1. Write it out –You are more accountable when your goals are on paper. It is hard to forget what your goals are when in black and white. Also, post them somewhere prominent where you will be forced to look at them daily.
  2. Make realistic –Nothing will give you failure faster than being unrealistic. This year my goal is to increase clients by adding 2 retainer accounts to my business. This may seem small to some however, I just added my second and now I am on to achieve my third. By being realistic, this allowed me to have met and now exceed my goal.
  3. Make specific – Pick a number or date, something that you can actually vision. When I reviewed my marketing plan, my goal was to become a better blogger.  I strive to write and post two articles per week. Without a concrete number I was sporadic in posting and had no direction to achieving constancy.
  4. Be flexible (willing to change scope) – The best way to achieve a goal is to be able to adapt to your surroundings. My education goal was to take a class on writing. However, the class was not offered.  I then took advantage of another class that was geared to a new service I will be offering. I flipped my goals to hone my new service skills and will take the writing course later on.
  5. Consult with experts/colleagues for input – This year I decided that I would also take advantage of the great seminars and workshops in my area. I talked with some colleagues to see what offerings were being scheduled and if they were topics I could benefit from. I am surrounded by these wonderful, knowledgeable people why not take advantage of it.

You do not need to have 50 pages, but you should have a plan of action in writing.  This will hold you accountable to keep you on task and on time to achieving your goals.
