Facebook, Business vs. Personal

Facebook Friends vs FansI often get asked about business vs. personal pages on Facebook.  Rather than go into the boring gory details I will tell you how I use each and you decide if that helps you.

My personal page is tailored for me, quirky, goofy and just plain me.  I share useless trivia, with my own spin of course.  Sometime picture, when I remember to take them and upload them.  Random thoughts and information from friends I find funny, crazy and useful.  This is the page where you find the personable me.  Being a virtual worker I rarely meet my clients face to face and this is a place where they can come and get to know me.  I am careful what I post as far as politics and religion because they are my views and I respect yours so without being able to have dialog I just do not go there.

My business page is where I share my knowledge.  You can find posts on useful articles I have read, links to applications and products I find worthwhile and the occasional question, quote or fact.  I have also started sharing documents and templates from my site and of course my blog posts.  I tend to add my personality but it is more about my professional demeanor.   This is the area where I want to share what I find relevant to your business.

Each has its own use and personally I feel all businesses should have a business page.  The reason is that anyone can go there to see your brand and products.  No invitations necessary and if you want to grow your community you can add hidden or special pages for fans only.  Business pages are public and therefore searched so this can also help you with your SEO and rankings.

One other note, I do not care about how many likes or friends I have.  That is just not important to me.  What does matter is if you find the information useful so on my business page I pay attention to the insights and on my personal page I note subjects that people are talking about.

Feel free to join me on either one or both for that matter, you are always welcome in my circle.

Signing off short and sweet,
Lee

Do I know you?

Over the last few days I receive connection requests from people I have no idea who they are. You know the “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.” Yes, I get them from Facebook and Twitter too. If I have the time I do a little research to see how we are connected, who we share in common or what exactly your business is. However, if you personalized the invitation or gave me a clue how I know you it would make life just a tad easier. Here are a few tips to help:

Personalize: When sending the request, add a how I know you sentence. Something like this:

Lee,

It was great to meet you at XYZ event. Thank you for the tips on resources I could use for my business. I would like to add you to my professional network.

Jane Doe

Step Two…Can Social Media really help me with my marketing?

Image: renjith krishnanSocial Media goes beyond Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.  This information I do know and in order to make these four resources effective for your business you do need to following these simple rules:

  • Configure your URL’s so they are consistent for your brand.  For example my Facebook fan page is fb.com/MyOfficeAssistant and my LinkedIn account is linkedin.com/in/MyOfficeAssistant.  Many of my other accounts are the same with the exception of Twitter which is twitter.com/MOALee.  At the time I signed up I was just beginning and thought using an abbreviation of my company name was a great idea.  I am now rethinking this one.
  • Add your company link to your profile. When you add the link to your site, be sure to specify the anchor text if possible.  For example on my LinkedIn profile page I have My Office Assistant for my company link instead of My Website.
  • Complete the online profile including a brief bio, your location and relevant keywords.  Many people will decide whether to connect with you or not based on your bio.  It is okay to add some personality but be sure to focus on your area of business expertise.
  • Add a photo/profile image.  Yes I know that sex sells but does it convey the right image for your business.  The best piece of advice I received was to get a professional headshot so if you do not have one you really should splurge on one.  Using a logo or brand image is okay but it is all about connecting and having a photo will add to the personal side of the connection.

Beyond those four networks there are many other choices for you to become active in to widen your reach and authority.  Here are a few others that I have found:

  • Your blog and the blogs of others: By posting fresh frequent content you allow the search engines a reason to crawl your site.   This also allows you to use relevant keywords for better site optimization.  Also, when you guest post on other blogs it will give you a chance to share your knowledge with a wider audience.
  • Discussion Board/Forum: By actively participating you can make many connections and set yourself apart for those looking for the best of the bunch.  Many times if I need to add to my team or need to hire out some work I will check industry discussion boards to get a feel for those who are sharing quality information and knowledge.
  • GetListed.org:  Claiming your listing will allow you to have control over how the search engine indexes you and prevents your competition or spammers from hijacking your listings.  By using this service you can get yourself listed on 6 different directories and get a to-do list of items or information that you are missing.
  • Videos and Podcasts:  You may not be great at writing but can share your thoughts in creative ways through video and audio.  Another way to build your reach is to take advantage of these venues.  Just remember to add a profile, avatar, links and relevant keywords so that they account work s for you.

There are many other avenues and it is okay to not like or use any of the above.  By taking the simple steps of consistency and frequency you too can add social media to your SEO plan.

All the best,

Lee

Time Lost = 8 Minutes

Stopwatch

Recently I spoke at an event and had the pleasure of being preceded by Susan Lieber of Leave it to Lieber.  Susan is a guru organization specialist and all around interesting entrepreneur.  During her presentation Susan discussed organization for your business and that multi-tasking does not work in regards to productivity.  She also touched on how many minutes you spend refocusing after a distraction.

Did you know that for every interruption you lose 8 minutes of focus time?  The brain is designed to focus on just one problem at a time and needs time to process each event.  So each time you get interrupted by that instant message, email or phone call you are losing precious task time.

I was the queen of multi-tasking but noticed that often times I was not on point and even frazzled by the end of the day.  I started scheduling my day, so much time for each client, a little for My Office Assistant and yes, lunch and stretch breaks.  Low and behold, I was getting more done, making less mistakes and even less stressed at the end of the day.  Here are some other things that I do:

Turn off email notifications.
Yes that little pop-up at the bottom of your screen will wreak havoc on you throughout the day.  Instant messages and social media are lumped in here too.

Close your email program during the time you are working on other tasks. How many of you check your email every 5 minutes?  If you check every hour and apply the do it, delete it or delegate it rule then you will not be so overwhelmed by those messages.

Designate time for phone calls.  Block out time that you are available for calls and consultations.  Let your clients know that you would love to talk to them but have designated times for project work and designated time for phone calls.

Make some me time. Everyone needs to stop and decompress during the day.  Get up for 15 minutes to clear your mind.  Take a walk outside and get some fresh air.  Surf the net or visit your social media sites.  Whatever works for you, then make sure you include it in your day.  By designating the time you feel less guilty actually taking it and it will help you refocus your energies.

If you do get interrupted, refocus before resuming. There are times that urgent matters arise.  However, take a minute to refocus before jumping right back in.  Actually you have 8 minutes to refocus yourself, so review where you left off, get a drink of water and do a breathing exercise.  Allow a few minutes, 8 to be exact, to get you back on track.

All the best,

Lee

Creating a Facebook Page

I have been asked lately to present to some local groups on creating a Facebook fan page and why you would need one.  So instead of writing out all the step by step directions, I put together this handy 5 minute video that will walk you through the beginning steps of creating a fan page.  Keep in mind that you can create as many pages as you would like however you need to be able to maintain them so do not go crazy just because you can.  Also, this is just a how to on creating.  Look for future video shorts on administration, custom profile pictures, creating a custom tab using FBML and some other uses of your fan page.

Click on the ScreenCast to start the video

Good luck on creating your own Facebook Fan Page.

All the best,
